Chapter Twenty-Two

James Smith replaced Mr. Brown. He did not agree with the way Mr. Brown had handled things. The men who had wanted to destroy those things that were sacred to the clan flourished under the supervision of Mr. Smith. One of these men, Enoch, unmasked an egwugwu in public. Mr. Smith hid Enoch in the parsonage to keep the egwugwu from coming after him. They told Mr. Smith that they like his brother so they would not harm him, but his church must be destroyed. He refused, but he was no match for them and the church was burnt to the ground.

I thought it was weird that they didn't try to kill Enoch. I would think that a tribe so bloodthirsty would want to kill the one who had committed such a crime, not just burn down the church.
